In the 80s, you could always see the new music videos on Friday night videos (on NBC) and on other shows. I haven't seen a music video for years.

The artistry in videos is so cool a lot of the time and we have been watching videos for so long now that it is too late to turn back the clock to the year before MTV came around which I think was in 1982 or 1983. Whatever year it was!
